Drawing:
Gallipoli 1915
by David Baker
Australian War Memorial (ART90422)

The men at Anzac were asked late in 1915 to contribute various items for inclusion in the Anzac Book, to be sold as a Christmas present to raise money for the troops. Before the book could be printed the troops were all withdrawn from Gallipoli, eight months after they had landed, with the loss of thousands of men, and without gaining their objective.
  • What are the symbols shown in this illustration?
  • Why are British symbols so strong?
  • What Australian symbols are there?
  • What is the significance of the tattered flag?
  • Why is the soldier looking so determined?
  • How does he compare with your image or ideal of the Anzac soldier?
  • We now say that Gallipoli was the start of an Australian identity — is this illustration good evidence of that claim?
  • Was Gallipoli a defeat? If so, is Australian identity built on failure?
  • How do you think this soldier might have felt about the campaign?
  • How would you gather evidence to test your answer to the previous question?
  • Are Gallipoli and Anzac Day important to your life today?
